Can you export a Keynote to HTML on an iPad?

No. Keynote for iPad exports to PDF, PowerPoint, Movie, Animated GIF, Images and Keynote Theme. HTML export exists only in Keynote for Mac. If you built the deck on an iPad and want to send it as a link with its animations, the export step has to happen on a Mac, any Mac, for about a minute.

What the iPad can export, and what each keeps

  • PDF: still pages; no motion, video or sound.
  • PowerPoint: builds and transitions are translated into PowerPoint's own, and fonts may change on the other side.
  • Movie: the motion plays, at fixed timings; the viewer watches rather than taps through.
  • Animated GIF: a short loop of selected slides, no sound.
  • Images: one picture per slide.
  • Keynote Theme: a template, not a presentation to send.

The route via a Mac

  • Get the .key onto a Mac: keep it in iCloud Drive and open it on a Mac signed in to the same Apple Account, or AirDrop it to a colleague's Mac.
  • In Keynote for Mac: File → Export To → HTML…, into an empty folder.
  • Drop that folder on linkdeck.me (or right-click → Compress and drop the .zip).
  • Send the link. It opens on the iPad you built it on, and on everyone else's phone and laptop.

No Mac available?

Then Movie is the closest the iPad gets: your builds and transitions play as video. It is a film of the deck rather than the deck, and Linkdeck cannot host it: Linkdeck only takes Keynote's HTML export. Upload the movie to a video host and send that link instead.

Presenting from the iPad is a different job

If what you need is to show the deck on the iPad in a room, you do not need any export: play it in Keynote on the iPad. A link becomes useful when the iPad is not yours, or does not have the file. Our iPad presenting guide covers that case.

Questions

Can I upload a .key file to Linkdeck?

No. Linkdeck hosts Keynote's HTML export, as a folder or a .zip. It does not convert .key files, which is why the export has to happen on a Mac.

Does the HTML export from the Mac play on an iPad?

Yes. The link opens in Safari on the iPad in landscape and advances on a tap, with video playing inside the slide.

Does the movie export keep animations?

Yes, as video. Builds and transitions play at the timings you set, but viewers cannot tap through or click links.
