Does Keynote's HTML export keep music and video?

Yes. Audio and video embedded in the deck are included in the HTML export, and they play in the browser. The one thing that changes is when sound is allowed to start.

The short answer

Embedded media survives the export. Apple's documentation for Keynote's HTML export lists animations, builds, transitions, hyperlinks, and audio and video among what is included. The export folder contains the media files in its assets folder alongside index.html.

Why the browser holds the sound

Safari, Chrome and Firefox refuse to play audio until the viewer has interacted with the page. This is a browser rule, not a Keynote or Linkdeck one. A deck that opens with a soundtrack will be silent until the first tap or click.

What Linkdeck does about it

Two adjustments to the export so it behaves on a phone.

  • Video tags are patched to play inline on iPhone and Android, inside the slide, rather than jumping to a full-screen player.
  • Audio is queued until the first tap. The viewer taps once to start the deck, and any audio that should already be playing starts at that moment.

Things that trip people up

  • Media that was linked rather than embedded may not be in the export. Check the assets folder for your video files.
  • Large video makes a large export. Free decks are capped at 200 MB and Pro decks at 500 MB.
  • Test on your own phone. Open the link, tap once, and listen.

Check it locally first

Open index.html from the export folder in Safari on your Mac and step through the slides. Video and audio that work there will work at the link.

Then share it

Zip the export folder, upload it on linkdeck.me, and send the link. The viewer gets the deck with its media in any browser, on any device.

Questions

Will the music play the moment the link opens?

No. Browsers block audio before the first user interaction. It starts on the viewer's first tap or click, which Linkdeck uses to begin the deck.

Does video go full screen on iPhone?

No. Linkdeck patches the export so video plays inline within the slide, the way it does in Keynote.

Is there a size limit for decks with video?

200 MB per deck on Free, 500 MB on Pro. Keynote keeps video at its original size in the export, so trim or compress long clips in Keynote first.
