Does a Keynote PDF keep the animations?
No. PDF is a page format, so each slide becomes a still page. Keynote's 'Print each stage of builds' option comes closest: one page per build step, so the order of the reveal survives. Motion, transitions, video and audio do not. If the motion carries the story, send the HTML export as a link and keep the PDF as the leave-behind.
What Keynote's PDF options do
File → Export To → PDF… offers a few choices that change the result:
- Print each stage of builds: every build step gets its own page, in order. A slide with six builds becomes six pages.
- Include presenter notes: your notes are printed with each slide.
- Include skipped slides: adds slides you hid from the show.
- Image quality: Good, Better or Best. Best keeps photography sharp at the cost of file size.
What the PDF loses
- Transitions, including Magic Move: you get the slide before and the slide after, nothing in between.
- Video: each clip becomes a single still frame.
- Audio and soundtracks: gone.
- Timing: auto-advancing builds become pages the reader flips at their own speed.
When a PDF is the right file
Printing. Procurement portals and data rooms that only accept PDF. Readers who annotate. An archive copy. A deck with no motion in it. In those cases the PDF is not a compromise, it is the correct format, and web links usually stay clickable.
When to send the deck instead
When a build reveals the answer, a transition shows a before and after, or a clip demonstrates the product. Export to HTML (File → Export To → HTML…), drop the folder on linkdeck.me and send the link: Apple's player runs in the viewer's browser with the motion intact, on a phone or a laptop.
A common pattern is both: the link in the body of the email, the PDF attached for whoever needs a file.
Questions
Can a PDF play Keynote animations at all?
Not in any PDF reader most people use. 'Print each stage of builds' keeps the order of the reveal as separate pages; for real motion, send the HTML export as a link or export a movie.
Will a video in my Keynote play in the PDF?
No. The clip is replaced by one still frame. To keep it playing, send the deck as a hosted HTML export, where video plays inside the slide.
Do hyperlinks survive in a Keynote PDF?
Web links generally do, and readers can click them. Links to other slides behave less predictably, so test the PDF before sending.
Send the version that moves
Export to HTML, drop the folder, send the link; attach the PDF too if they need a file.
